1. For researching the re-sprouting and development of the tea bud after frost damage, some experiment were performed in an artificial damage caused by taking off the bud by hand in 1957-1958. Especially the promoting effects of ammonium sulfate dressing and gibberellin spraying on the growth of, bud after the damage were investigated in 1958.
2. There were two kinds of buds which appeared after been suffered from a slight damage, i.e., one developed from the survived bud, and the other from the lateral bud on the lower part of injured stem. Sometimes the adventitious bud on an old stem also developed in a heavy damage.
3. The plucking date of the injured bush was delayed from 10 to 45 days than that of the uninjured. When injured at the 1-2 leaves-stage and the 3-4 leaves-stage, the plucking date was delayed to mid May and mid June respectively, the latter time was just prior to the second cropping of the uninjured. The later the time of injury, the less the yield and total nitrogen content in the leaves. The plucking date of the survived bud was not so delayed, that of the re-sprouting bud, however, was delayed afterward the second plucking of the uninjured.
4. The treatments of ammonium sulfate dressing and of gibberellin spraying on the injured tea plant promoted the growth of the survived bud and prolonged the internodes of the second and third lateral buds, but did not almost increase the weight of leaves and number of leaves. While the effect of the treatments on the re-sprouting bud -was not remarkable.
5. The plucking date of survived bud was hastened 2 days by gibberellin spraying and more 2 days by an additional ammonium sul-fate dressing, the total nitrogen content in the tea leaves, however, slightly decreased by gibberellin spraying.
