Recently, many tea gardens have been seriously damaged by mulberry scale(Pseudaulacaspis pentagons), particularly in Shizuoka, Kyoto and Nara prefectures. The insect has three generations a year. The controlling methods at the larval and adult stages were tried, the larvae at the first stage were killed by lime sulfur liquid (1:20 dilution), lubricating oil emulsion (0.5-1.0%), lubricating oil emulsion plus DN (0.5-1.0%), and parathion (0.00466), but they were ineffective on the adults. The cyanide gas fumigation was the most effective on both the larvae and adults, the fumigation was put into practice covered with two kinds of sheet, one was made of paper, and the other vinyl film, the front side of the latter was black and the back side was white.
