The variation of structure of the sintered low grade kaolin (2μunder, Amakusa body and Bingo-shōhara-kaolin) containing LiF (0.2 mole%) during mullitization was studied. The variation of phase structure of the constituent was the same as in the case of the reaction of pure kaolin. The kaolin and meta-kaolin turned out to be of disilicate structure by observing IR and Raman, and the coordination number of AI was 6 by observing X-ray fluorescence. Although the structure of AI-Si spinel had been understood to be metasilicate, it was confirmed to be of an imperfect metasilicate structure from the results of IR Raman and X-ray observation. The coordination numbers of AI in AI-Si spinel were 4 and 6. The structure of mullite turned out to be metasilicate by observing IR and Raman, the coordination numbers of AI in mullite structure being 4 and 6. In the silicate structure of mullite, it is understood, the octahedron of oxygens with AI-centered are chained linearly (along c axix).
