The mechanism of mullitization using low grande low grade kaolin (roseki) with the addition of mineralizer (LiF, 5.19wt-%) was discussed. Samples were sintered for 90 days at 700°-1200℃. Relations among mullite yields (α) and logarithms of sintering time (t) were represented by Tammann′s equation : α=A+B log t; where A and B are constant. Waiting time to, saturated time te and saturated mullite formation rate αe(%) were discussed and the activation energies of 1/to, 1/te and αe against 1/T were given 296.7, 47.8 and 50.0 KJ/mol respectively. The empirical expressions 1/to ∝(1/te)6 and αe≒5.4×103 1/te were obtained and their physical meansings were discussed. The constant B in Tammann′s equation was correlated with to, te, αe and activation energy of mullitization. The mechanism of mullitization in the experiment did not correspond to pseudo lst order reaction, surface rate determination reaction and diffusion rate determination reaction, by comparing theoretical equations with the experimental results.
