Who am I? What is all of this that surrounds me-things, people, the stars? Perhaps these sound like the questions of a five-year old. That may be. Nevertheless, I don't believe even an 80 year old fully understands them. Recently in the news we read about high-level politicians being arrested, policemen involved in bank robberies, mothers killing their children without the hint of remorse or concern. Do these events have anything to do with our self-identity? How and with what do we identify ourselves? And with what do we not identify ourselves? This paper is divided into two parts. Part I will contain the results of the survey I conducted to probe into this issue of 'self-identity', 2002. In Part II, I shall take up the problem of 'self' and self-identity by examining several passages from the oldest Buddhist writings and from the Japanese Zen teacher, Eihei Dogen Zenji.
