The aim of this paper is to elucidate one aspect of the Ekphraseis (i.e.descriptions) of human face and body incorporated in the Byzantine heroic poem "Digenes Akrites". Analysis is not performed from the philological viewpoint but from the linguistic(lexical) and aesthetic ones. By examining which parts of the human face and body are depicted in the Ekphraseis, we can obtain a classification of these, distinguishing the parts which Byzantine authors would prefer to describe in their works from the parts which they tended to neglect.Besides, since the influence of the Romances in the post-Classical and Byzantine periods on "Digenes" cannot be ignored, these romances are also examined from the same viewpoint as above.Finally, it is demonstrated that the results obtained from the linguistic analysis lead to the illustration of the aesthetic sense in the late Byzantine period by determining the specific parts of the human face and body in which beauty resides.
