English poetry is virtually neglected in an ordinary high school classroom in Japan, although most of the English textbooks now in use contain at least one or two poems. Poetry, however, can be a good material for Japanese students in learning English. By reading carefully-selected English poems, students can get emotional education and learn natural rhythm of English. They can also learn something about the cultural background and the sense of humour of English speaking people. The aim of this paper is to give a theoretical background for making fuller use of English poetry in English education in Japanese high schools.
