A Poverty Causal Model　of Cocoa Smallholders in　Indonesia : Some Initial Findings from South Sulawesi

• Poverty reduction in Indonesia is very important serious problem for society development in which cocoa smallholders are no exception. Why the cocoa smallholders are still poor at the present in the country and what then we should consider for them. This article records some initial findings on cocoa smallholders-poverty linkages from South Sulawesi Province and visualizes a Poverty Causal Model of Cocoa Smallholders in order to answer these questions. To end up, we employed (1) Factor Analysis for constructing representative factor for the dimension, and (2) Path Analysis for extracting the Direct Impact of independent variable on “Household Income” as Poverty proxy in the model specified. Some important initial findings ; (1) there are six crucial dimensions in explaining smallholders-poverty linkages i.e. Household Human Resource, Agricultural Asset, Access to Social Facility, Access to Information, Agricultural Economic Activity, and Non-Agricultural Economic Activity ; (2) based on the Standardized Path Coefficient (β Weights), increasing cocoa production (β=.557) is considerable important in improving household income meaning alleviate poverty of smallholders ; (3) the next important element should be considered in reducing poverty of cocoa smallholder is expanding clove area as well as improving farm equipment (β=.469) ; (4) besides, developing orange and coffee productions (β=.377) and increasing the family transfer-source income like remittance (B=.258) could be also the next routes in finding solution for poverty of smallholders directly. In terms of social services, providing public health centers (β=－.206) as accessible as for smallholders could also help poverty reduction effort in the country.
