The effects of loading rate on fracture toughness of ice have been investigated using sharply edge-notched specimens by bending at -10℃. The loading rate KI covers from 2.5 up to 3×103 kPam1/2s-1. The notch of specimen was made by molding a razor blade in the specimen in the ice growing process and removeing it before the bending test. Two sizes of specimens, section sized 25×25 mm (small size specimen) and 50×50 mm (medium size specimen) respectively, were used. Set of about thirty small size specimens or about ten medium size specimens was tested at each test loading rate. The experimental results are as follows. (1) A range of KI , KI> (5~20) × 102 kPam1/2s-1, exists where no effect of KI on the fracture toughness KIf is observed. (2) The values of KIf are lower in higher KI range, and they show a transitional change in a range KI =10~102 kPam1/2s-1 . (3) The effect of loading rate on the minimum fracture toughness KIf] min is very small in full tested KI range both in small and medium size specimens. (4) The values of KIf] min of small and medium size specimens seems to coinside approximately. The maximum fracture toughness KIf] max and the KIf at 50 % cummulative probability of fracture KIf] 50 of medium size specimens are smaller than these of small size speci mens. (5) The KIf] min obtained is anticipated to be the fracture toughness of large polycrystalline ice containing adequate number of crystals at the front line of the crack or the sharp notch. (6) It was found that a vinyl silicone impression material for dentistry is suitable to make replica of the fracture surface for macrofractography.
