In order to evaluate the amino acid metabolism in the salivray glands under physiological and pathological conditions, the seventeen different individual free amino acid levels (Isoleucme, Leucine, Lysine, Methionine, Phenylalanine, Threonine, Valine, Alanine, Glycine, Proline, Glutamic acid, Serine, Tyrosine, Aspartic acid, Cystine, Histidine and Arginine) were analysed by the column chromatographic method with automatic amino acid analyser (JLC - 6AH) The specimens were obtained from the eleven submandibular glanbs and the four parotid glands which were removed at the radical neck dissection of the malignant tumors in head and neck regions and were not injured macroscopically, the six submandibular glands with a chronic inflammation, and the parotid gland with a mixed tumor. The results of the present study were summarized as follows : 1. It is considered that the differences of the free amino acid levels in the tissues between submandibular and parotid glands were caused according to the differences of the energy metabolism in the tissues. 2. The differences of the free amino acid levels in the salivary gland tissues with a chronic inflammation and a tumor were also found in the amino acid which are related to the energy metabolism in the tissues.
