Phosphorylase (PhR) activity in the soft palate muscles (consisting of M. levator veli palatini, M. tensor veli palatini and M. palatinus) of the cat was studied histochemically and the relationship between PhR and succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) activity was examined using serial cross sections prepared from these muscles. 1) The fibers in the M. levator veli palatini were classified into two types by the degree of PhR activity. In red fibers (high SDH activity), fibers with high and intermediate PhR activity accounted for 28% and 72%, respectively. In intermediate fibers (intermediate SDH activity), fibers with high and inter-mediate PhR activity accounted for 40% and 60%, respectively. 2) In the M. tensor veli palatini, fibers with high PhR activity accounted for 88% in red fibers and 90% in intermediate fibers, respectively. The remainder were fibers with intermediate PhR activity. 3) Fibers in the M. palatinus were classified into three types by their degree of PhR activity. The compositions of fibers with high, intermediate and low PhR activity were 37%, 53% and 10% in red fibers, 44%, 46% and 10% in intermediate fibers, and 30%, 60% and 10% in white fibers, respectively. From these results, it is indicated that the soft palate muscles of the cat show relatively high PhR activity. A constant relationship between PhR and SDH activity was not observed in these muscles.
