The purposes of this study were to assess the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of the physical activity questions for 60minutes among children. To assess the vahdity of the questions, 217 pupils in the 5th and 6th grades at an elementary school in Okinawa, Japan, answered the questionnaire an took the sports test including the 20m shuttle run test to estimate aerobic fitness. To asses the reliability of the questions, 221 pupils in the 5th and 6th grades completed the questionnaire on two occasions, one-week apart. Pupils were asked how many days during the previous week and during a typical week they were physically active for at least 60 minutes. The response options ranged from 0 to 7 days. The two items were averaged to form a composite measure, a score of less than 5 days classified the respondent as inactive, and more than 5 days classified the respondent as active. In the validity study, except for the 6th grade boys, all pupils who were classified as an active group had significantly higher physical fitness scores compared with those who were classified as an inactive group. As for the aerobic fitness, all pupils who were classified as an active group had significantly higher scores compared with those who were classified as an inactive group. In the reliability study, all pupils showed moderate or substantial reliability, with kappa statistics ranging from 0.67 to 0.85 and percent agreements ranging from 84.6 to 96.4%. The results of this study suggest that the self report questions about physical activity for 60 minutes have acceptable reliability and validity, but further validation studies using objective techniques and in other study populations are needed.
