The present study is an attempt, first, to demonstrate an evidence that social desirability gives rise to attraction, secondly to examine the relationship between criterion- situations and amounts of attraction, and thirdly, to clarify the relationship between self-evaluations and the amounts of attraction received. Subjects were 106 women students drawn from an original sample of 135 junior-college freshmen. Social desirability for the three stimulus persons (one with more desirability than the subject, one with equal desirability, and one with less desirability) were prepared in the pamphlet form. After examining the characteristics, the subjects were requested to indicate the extent to which they chose the three stimulus persons on the seven criterion-situations. Each question was rated on a 7 - point scale, and each stimulus person got ratings as: a playmate, a talking companion at a party, a congenial friend, a right-hand man, a superior officer, a leader, and a person similar to the subject. The major findings of the present study were as follows: (1) Attraction toward a stimulus person socially more desirable than oneself was found to be greater than, or, equal to that toward a stimulus person similar to oneself in respect of social desirability. This result shows social desirability gives rise to interpersonal attraction. (2) Some differences were . found in the relationship between criterion-situations and amounts of attraction. In the situations of a playmate and a congenial friend, persons with more social desirability and ones with the same degree of desirability were attracted equally. In other situations, preference was given to persons with more social desirability. (3) Contrary to our prediction, subjects with high self-evaluation received a greater amount of attraction from others.
