The purpose of the present paper is to demonstrate an evidence that socially desirable persons are not always attracted, and to examine the differential attraction received among those who are socially more desirable, those who are similar to her, and those who are socially less desirable. Subjects were 72 women students in a junior college. First, some information about personality characterististics for four stimulus persons was given to subjects, which was expressed in fourteen adjectives rated on a 7-point scale. A was assumed to be a sophomore with average social desirability, B to be with more social desirability, C to be with similar personality characteristics, and D to be with less social desirability. After examining the information given, subjects were requested to indicate how A liked B, C, and D, as a co-applicant for a position, as a playmate, and as a leader, respectively. The major findings of the present study were as follows: (1) When the stimulus person was assumed to be a co-applicant for a position, more social desirability did not lead to more attraction. (2) When the stimulus person was assumed to be a co-applicant for a position, a person similar to herself, and one with less social desirability were attracted to the same extent. These results may safely be interpreted to show that social desirability does not always give rise to interpersonal attraction; it has some limitation.
