1) Observations were made on the inner structures of well-developed roots of dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) ; the secondary phloem is characteristically very thick and the cell groups composed of sieve tubes, laticifers, companion cells and some parencymatous cells are regularly arranged in many concentric cycles. 2) Adventitious buds were histologically investigated ; buds in excised root segments arise from the cells near the surface of callus-like tissues which are derived from parenchymatous cells of the secondary phloem and xylem as well as from the cambial cells. 3) Parenchymatous cells of the secondary phloem and xylem in the root are readily dedifferentiated because of their high degree of totipotency. This characteristic feature is related with the well-known fact that the dandelion makes an easy regeneration even from a very small piece of root.
