1) The effect of chilling and photoperiodic treatments on cone development in P. thunbergii and P. densiflora was examined, and the environmental conditions for artificially inducing cone development were ascertained. All conelets in both pines developed rapidly in the next spring whenever they were put in the open with natural winter coldness, while all cones remained inactive as underdeveloped conelets when they were always kept under warm condition over 10℃ in winter. This difference of development between chilled and unchilled conelets was found independently of day length conditions.
