The Center for International Students at Mie University was established in April 1997 and the Japanese Intensive Elementary Course offered by the Center began in October of that year. Now, in the second semester of 1999, this six-month intensive study program is being taught for the fifth time. The first and second time the course was offered, enrollment was open only to foreign research fellows nominated by their embassy and forelgn Students enrolled in the Faculty of Education's teacher-training program. The third time the course was given, in the semester beginning October 1998, enrollment was opened to include all international students recommended by their supervisilng teacher whose level in Japanese was determined as suitable for an elementary course. In this paper, the present status of the Japanese Intensive Elementary Course is reported, focuslng on the students enrolled in the first and second semester of 1999. Issues related to how students are accepted into the course and how the course has been guided are examined. Finally, some of the problems that accompanied opening the course to all international students are considered as a basis for making suggestions for how better management of the course can be achieved in the future.
