Research schemes on university students' commitment in international exchange may employ two different approaches: An attitudinal approach to study behaviors, values and consciousness of individuals and a systemic approach to focus on educational institutions, opportunities, group dynamics and activity analyses. This article examines, first, the results of the two existing survey research in the first category and of an action research in the second category. The writer points out three fundamental issues in herent in current research in Japan: 1) ambiguous but widely accepted notion of the ‘internationalization of universlty,’ 2) the concept of ‘culture’ as a fixed entity and 3) the dichotomy between ‘Japanese’ and ‘non-Japanese’ as contrastive cultural categories. It is indispensable to ‘deconstruct’ these notions and cultural frameworks that have been shared consciously and unconsciously among the researchers. Finally, the article presents the outline of an ongolng ethnographic research on university students who voluntarily engage in various activities to interact with international students on campus. The researcher employs anthropological methods to clarify psychological and cultural processes that develop among the students who gradually overcome language and cultural barriers through interactions.
