"Survival Japanese", now a familiar term has not however been clearly defined nor has it's contents been considered. Summarizing descriptions of the term in the few prior works of literature, survival Japanese can be defined as "Japanese for communication taught or used in the short term, the minimum degree of nowledge and language needed to live in Japan" (Tanaka 1988: 90-91, Miyachi/Tanaka 1988: 15, the Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language 1990: 70). Although short-term residents are basically the intended learners, those who stay longer, including immigrants, also need to acquire the necessary Japanese to survive temporarily on coming to Japan (cf. Miyachi/Tanaka 1988: 15). The same is true for students from overseas and their family members. However, acquisition of Japanese is not always temporary in those cases, but is rather considered "the preliminary stage" of full-fledged Japanese study. Surprisingly, this fact has been almost overlooked. What to learn (teach) in the cases where survival Japanese is acquired as "the preliminary stage of basic Japanese study" has never been discussed. In this research, based on the above, syllabi analysis and it's examination were conducted in four introductory textbooks on basic Japanese for short-term learners, as the first step to find necessary syllabi features for survival Japanese as"the preliminary stage of basic Japanese study". As a result, the following three necessities were pointed out: 1. necessity to simplify/limit functions learners will study, 2. necessity to provide modules consisting of one-Shot units, 3. necessity to compose/arrange functions according to the difficulty.
