In this paper, practical lessons using listening activities and the interviewing of students were conducted. The study concerned itself with middle level (level Ⅱ) university-students at the Center for International Students of Mie University. The objective of this study was to improve two skills among students. One skill was the listening comprehension of the speakers intentions (i.e.understanding the speaker's intentions and feelings clearly). The other skill concerned speaking techniques (for example, how to open and end a conversation). These skills were, henceforth, taught in Japanese listening classes. This course was to improve understanding of interviewing techniques in conversation via a textbook and listening tapes. Besides this, conversational fillers such as Soo-desu-ka, Soo-desu-ne were taught. After the course was completed, they conducted interview tasks. At the end of the course, it was found that Soo-desu-ka and Soo-desu-ne were difficult for students to understand when applied to actual conversation, Whereby many students mistook the speaker's intentions. In cultivating conversation, it is important to study basic speaking activities to learn the speaker's intentions. When using interviewing techniques, this is of utmost importance.
