Since coxsackie virus A16 had been isolated from patients of hand, foot and mouth disease by Nakamura et al. (1965), the epidemic cases were investigated in Kanto area in 1966, in Osaka and Kobe area in 1967 and in Northern part of Kyushu island in 1968. The virus would be distributed widely and the epidemic of hand, foot and mouth disaese caused by coxsackie virus A16 were observed in the whole of Japan, 1970. In Nagasaki city and neighbourhood, the peak of epidemic of it was occurred in June and July, 1970. In this epidemic, 41 specimens obtained from 34 patients were examined for the virus isolation and 20 strains of isolates were obtained. Fourteen of them have been identified coxsackie virus A16 and 3 of them, coxsackie virus A5. On the other hand, 2 of them were difficult to identify. It was noteworthy fact that the epidemic of hand, foot and mouth disease had carried with the outbreak of herpangina caused by coxsackie virus A5.
