Theory of mind has recently been of great interest to researchers studying children's understanding of the mind. One reason for this interest is that theory of mind is concerned with interesting activities such as pretend play and lying. This paper reviewed Japanese research literatures on theory of mind and understanding others, with special emphasis on two issues : whether the false belief task reflects children's ability to understand other's mental state and whether the ability to understand mental representations is different from the one to understand representations in general. This paper then explores mechanisms of conceptural change in the children's theory of mind.
