An abnormal hemoglobin resembling Hb E was discovered in two possively unrelated families living in Shimane prefecture, Japan. Study of the amino acid substitution has demonstrated that it is a new variant of Hb A. Its molecular formula can be expressed by α_2β_2.^90Lys This new abnormal hemoglobin, named Hb Agenogi, seems to cause no clinical symptom though it has slightly lowered oxygen affinity.
