The purpose of the present study was to compare the physiological and subjective responses of Japanese, European, and the US firefighting helmet, gloves, and boots for international standardization. Eight Japanese firefighters (51.9±5.3ml/kg/min in VO_<2max>) participated in three experimental conditions (European helmet+gloves+boots, Japanese helmet+gloves+boots, and the US helmet+gloves+boots conditions; EU, JPN, and US condition) with the identical Japanese bunker jacket and pants, without self-contained breathing apparatus (Total PPE weight: 9.4, 8.2, and 10.1 kg for the EU, JPN, and US condition, respectively). A trial consisted of 10 min-rest followed by 30 min-running at 6 km・h^<-1> and 20 min-recovery at the air temperature of 32℃ and 60%RH in a climatic chamber. The results showed that there were no significant differences among the three conditions in oxygen consumption, heart rate, total sweat rate, rectal temperature, and mean skin temperature, whereas increases in forehead temperature and ratings of perceived exertion were significantly lower in the JP condition than in other conditions (P<0.05). Increases in calf temperature were greater for the US condition than for others (P<0.05). These results from the international comparison have implication for the improvement of protective helmets, gloves, and boots for firefighters and international standards.
