Immunological studies on crude polysaccharide fractions (PSF) obtained from "Ukon" (Curcumae Rhizoma, 宇金), "Tochuu" (Eucommiae Cortex, 杜仲), "Keihi" (Cinnamomi Cortex, 桂皮), "U-shou" (Linderae Umbellatae Ramus, 烏樟) and "Nikushouyou "(Cistanchis Herba, 肉〓蓉), were performed. 1) The anti-complementary activities of these PSF were higher than that of the positive control, zymosan A. 2) All of them inhibited a decrease of complementary activity by the Forssman systemic reaction in guinea pigs, and also diminished the severity of symptoms caused by the reaction. 3) All of them showed antitumor activity against Sarcoma 180 ascites in mice, and moderately suppressed adjuvant arthritis in rats. 4) Plaque forming cells (PFC) of spleen in mice were increased by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of PSF's from "Tochuu" and "Nikushouyou" after immunization with SRBC; on the other hand, PFC were decreased by i.p. injection of PSF's from "Ukon," "Tochuu" and "Nikushouyou" at 72 hr prior to immunization. None of the PSF had any effect on PFC when orally administration (p.o.) for 5 consecutive days. 5) Carbon clearance activity in mice showed increase at 72 hr after i.p. injection of the PFS from "Tochuu" and "Keihi," and at 96 hr of "Ukon," "Tochuu" and "Keihi." By p.o., only "Keihi" caused an increase in carbon clearance activity at 24 hr.
