Research has revealed tendencies of sequence at work in the process of acquiring the simple past tense. Learners tend to acquire irregular verbs earlier than regular verbs (Krashen, 1982), and accomplishement and achievement verbs tend to be used earlier than state and activity verbs according to the Aspect Hypothesis. This paper focuses on learners' awareness of specific verbs, including "went", and tries to work out common factors which these verbs have. From writing tasks performed by Japanese L1 and non-Japanese L1 learner groups, it was found that irregular verbs and dynamic verbs appear to make an early impression on learners. In particular, the combination "went to" was used most in both groups. This tendency is more noticeable with the Japansese L1 learners who also more often used "went to" correctly. It is possible that they used it as a chunk, and the same possibility also exists with "listened to"; "came to" was less often used correctly by Japanese L1 learners.
