• Sandplay therapy is widely used in a variety of therapeutic settings. However, the conventional sandplayprocedure often seems invasive for some clients because of the high flexibility of the instruction. LandscapeMontage Technique (LMT) is proposed as an alternative tool of sandplay in order to avoid the invasive aspect.In LMT sessions, clients can work on paintings following structured and sequentially-presented instructions.Although LMT is regarded as an efficient method of sandplay for some clients, certain clients who are not goodat drawing may be unwilling to receive LMT. In the present study, we attempted to apply LMT instructionsto sandplay and to experimentally examine the potential of sandplay with structured instructions (structuredsandplay). Fourteen undergraduates participated in the experiment and worked with both conventional sandplay(free sandplay) and structured sandplay. After completion of each type pf sandplay, participants wrote downtheir impressions, thoughts, and feelings during each set of sandplay creations. Using the text data from the freedescriptions of the participants, a qualitative analysis and a correspondence analysis were conducted. Resultssuggested that free sandplay tends to promote affective states, thus, clients often need to deal with not onlypositive but negative emotions. On the other hand, structured sandplay may make the creation of sandplayworks easier, but the fixed and formulaic instructions may spoil the creativity.
