The coprecipitation of arsenic with iron hydroxide has been used as one of the methods to remove arsenic from acid mine drainage (AMD). However, a large quantity of arsenic-containing sludge remains after the treatment. From the aspect of effective use of resources, it is desirable to utilize iron in AMD as a resource. We focused on jarosite because jarosite can be synthesized under an acidic condition. During the synthesis of jarosite in AMD, arsenic is transferred from AMD into jarosite. In this study, we performed the removal of arsenic contained in acidic aqueous solution during the synthesis of jarosite using ultrasound irradiation. We could synthesize jarosite by ultrasound irradiation. In addition, we removed arsenic from the acidic solution through the jarosite synthesis and confirmed that As(III) was more difficult to remove compared to As(V).
