The failure mechanism of multi-story buildings subjected to earthquake load was statistically investigated. The structures were rigid frames composed of columns and beams whose yield strengths were random variables following log-normal distributions. The earthquake load was the statically applied horizontal force whose intensity distribution over the building height was that specified by Japan Code. Numerical simulation of 4-story and 9-story buildings showed that the failure mechanism of the structural system is very sensitive to the randomness in members' yield strengths. It was demonstrated that decrease of the standard deviation in the yield strength and increase of the correlation between members can significantly improve the ductility of buildings which are designed on the basis of strong column-weak beam concept. This paper enhanced the idea that the post-yielding ductility of buildings, which is a very important property of earthquake resistant structures, should be determined from the failure mode of the total system. In order to practice this idea in design stage, a short computer program written in BASIC was presented for designers.
