The developmental stages of gametangia and sporophytes were investigated for four species of Ptychomitrium : P. dentatum, P. fauriei, P. linearifolium and P. polyphylloides, on the basis of the gatherings from a single site in Kochi Prefecture (Befu Valley). The method to record developmental stages devised by Greene (1960) proved to be applicable to Ptychomitrium. The four species have a similar mode of gametangial development, that is, a juvenile (J) appearing in August to September and a mature stage (M) in June to July. With respect to the developmental period from juvenile stage (J) to mature stage (M), female gametangia take much shorter time (only one month) than male gametangia, in which juvenile and immature stages (J-I) last for nine months. Fertilization occurs in June, during rainy season. Meiosis is observed in mid-autumn to late winter. In the female inflorescence a small male-branch arises near the base of a nearly mature archegonium. Matured archegonia receive spermatids shed from the antheridia produced on the tip of the small male-branch arising not in the female inflorescence with the given archegonia, but in that of last year's inflorescence which now has only withered archegonia (and deopercu rated sporophytes if present). Opercula are lost in late winter to early spring.
