The annual z term in the variation of latitude was first discovered and proposed by H. Kimura, the director and observer of the International Latitude Observatory of Mizusawa, in 1902. However, its physical interpretation has not been obtained for a long time. In 1970, Y. Wako of the same observatory noticed that z term might be caused by an error in the value of amplitude of semi-annual nutation term. In other words, z term might be closely related to the internal constitution of the Earth.
