Can we measure the true temperature of a surface, across which heat is transferring? Now and then this query troubles researchers engaged in thermal experiments. If a radiation sensing method is used, all the necessary constants such as the emissivity and the configuration factor must be known. It is generally difficult to determine these constants. No thermographical determination of cutaneous temperature is free from this problem. If allowable, the surface may be machined for embedding a temperature sensor or coated with temperature sensitive paint. However, there is always the question whether the machining or the coating has or has not altered the surface. The simplest, and in many cases, the only method of surface temperature measurement is that of contacting a sensor onto the surface, but this entails a great many problems because the presence of the sensor will disturb the temperature field around the point of contact. Various schemes have been tried to minimize the disturbance, including those by the lecturer. In this lecture, a brief account will be given on the history and state of technology or surface temperature measurement. A new look at the problem will be presented along the theme of the symposium "Xan-Thermal Environment System". Some experimental results obtained in the lecturer's laboratory will be introduced for discussion.
