Study on the Arc Characteristics in Different Gases Based on Spectrum Measurement

Substitutes of SF_6 gas are focused on the investigation because of the SF_6 gas's greenhouse effect. The paper is devoted to the experimental study of the arc plasma characteristics in four different gases SF_6, N_2, Ar and CO_2. To one flexible model of gas circuit breaker, dc low current (100A) short circuit experiments have been carried out considering the influence of contact gap (10, 15mm), gas pressure (1, 3, 5atm) as well as gas species particularly. During the experiments,the arc image, arc current and arc voltage are recorded by the high speed camera, shunt and voltage transducer, respectively. Three CuI arc characteristic lines were measured with spectrometer to calculate the arc temperature and electron density in different conditions. It demonstrates that to the above mentioned four kinds of gases, the arc voltage and instability increase with the gap and gas pressure normally; however, under the same experimental conditions, SF_6 arc holds the minimum arc radius and the arc voltage of Ar arc is the lowest. Moreover, spectrum measurement and analysis show that CuI spectrum lines are distinguished clearly, Ar arc electron temperature is the highest and SF_6 arc electron density is the largest.
