When white space radio systems of the same type are operating in the same geographic location, coexistence problem can be solved by self-coexistence mechanisms embedded in such radio systems. However, when neighbor white space radio systems are of the different type, external coexistence system is required. The most developed external coexistence system is the IEEE 802.19.1 white space coexistence system. This paper shows dynamic behavior of the IEEE 802.19.1 white space coexistence system in the heterogeneous environment consisting of the IEEE 802.11 radio systems having bandwidth of 5MHz and 10MHz and operating in TV white space frequency bands. The IEEE 802.19.1 white space coexistence system is evaluated by using real radio system prototypes and real coexistence system prototype. In particular, three 802.11 5MHz networks are deployed each having one access point and one station and two 802.11 10MHz networks are deployed each having one access point and one station. Four TV channels are available. It is shown that when these five radio systems are not using IEEE 802.19.1 white space coexistence system, only three 5MHz radio systems can operate. When these five radio systems are using IEEE 802.19.1 white space coexistence system, all three 5MHz radio systems and both 10MHz radio systems can operate with high quality of service.
