概要

東日本大震災をもたらした巨大地震のような歴史的事象の生起について統計的観点から考察する.また,統計学の歴史において19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて今日においてもなお用いられるような推測法の極めて重要な発見がなされた.特に,ピアソン(K. Pearson (1857-1936))によるカイ2乗適合度検定を取り上げ,さらにゴセット(W. S. Gosset (1876-1937))によるスチューデントのt分布に基づく推測法を考えるとともにその基盤になる非心t分布のパーセント点の高次近似に関する最近の成果についても論じる.いずれの推測法も現在でも統計的推測やデータ解析等においてごく自然に使われている.
