Tea catechins, in crude form and as isolated epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) and epicatechin gallate (ECg), were investigated regarding their effects on experimentally induced alimentary hypercholesterolemia in exogenously hypercholesterolemic (ExHC-Ta) rats. Effects on blood cholesterol, fecal cholesterol and low density lipids were studied over a 60 day period. When catechins were administered after induction of hypercholesterolemia, little effect was seen on cholesterol levels but when rats were fed catechins in conjunction with a high cholesterol diet, cholesterol did not. reach expected levels, suggesting catechins have a depressant effect on the absorption of cholesterol and this effect may be useful as protection against hypercholesterolemia.
