One of the educational goals of our Information and Communication Systems department is to train students whounderstand basic knowledge about hardware, software and network technology, who can combine knowledge to developcomplex systems. To develop complex systems, project based problem solving skills are also required. Toward this goal,we conducted a "Systems Construction Project Type Graduate Study". The target system is an autonomous and remotecontrollable robot car named Earth Rover. Its main features are as follows. (1)An ARM micro computer and a PC are puton the Earth Rover. (2)ARM controls sensors and actuators. (3)PC autonomously runs the Earth Rover communicatingwith ARM. (4)Actuators are a direct current motor, a servo motor for steerage, and a robot hand. (5)For drive control, GPS,a digital compass, an acceleration sensor, a gyro censor, a rotary encoder, a supersonic wave range sensor, a power voltagesensor, and a current sensor are used. (6)For image processing, a web camera and a Kinect sensor are used.
