The aim of the present paper is to investigate Defo's style through the use of phrasal verbs and to describe the results obtained (i.e. some specific characteristics of phrasal verbs in Defoe and his style) systematically and concisely. The topics covered are divided into two major parts: an introductory part (sections 1.1-1.6) and an analysis part (section 2.1-2.11). The introductory part largely deals with the background and methodology of this study. The analysis part includes not only syntactic and semantic features of phrasal verbs but also stylistic issues such as "dramatic present", "hybrid formations", of the "superlative" from in Defoe's use of those verbs. The sections are arranged according to the rough contents of a book-form monograph to be completed in the near future. Finally, this study is closely related to one of my goals: to bring to light the genius of modern colloquial English in the period of 1660-1760 as seen from the viewpoint of phrasal verbs.
