This article reports on whether the use of an e-learning course utilizing public domain movies promotes the out-of-classroom learning activities of students with different proficiency levels and results in an increase in study time and improved proficiency. Although movies have great potential as effective teaching materials for their motivational effect, their use is usually limited to within the classroom due to copyright restrictions and it is difficult to extend their motivational effect to learning activities conducted outside the classroom. Thus, in this study, a movie-based e-learning course was developed with the use of public domain movies. Three groups of subjects of different proficiency levels and one control group participated in the experiment. The results revealed that the use of a movie-based e-learning course was effective to a certain degree in promoting out-of-classroom learning activities. The results also revealed that it helped improve the listening abilities of learners. Significant differences, however, were not observed compared with the conventional method. The implications of these findings are also discussed.
