In this work, we consider the modulation-transparency issue related to the 3GPP-LTE debate to enhance multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) support in the upcoming LTE-A release of the 3GPP cellular standard. MU-MIMO is called modulation-transparent (or simply transparent, T-MIMO) when no signalling is provided to the receiver to inform it about the modulation scheme of the co-scheduled receivers. It is called non-transparent (NT-MIMO) otherwise. Such signalling is provided to the receiver to help it better deal with interference. There appears to be a disagreement within 3GPP on whether the capacity gains of modulation non-transparency are significant enough to be worth the increased signaling. Thus, we derive in this report closed-form capacity expressions so as to assess the expected gains of modulation non-transparency. Our results suggest that while substantial capacity gains can be expected from DCI non-transparency, such benefits are conditional upon sufficiently accurate CSI at the receiver's side.
