Typically, in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, an iterative decoder yields no more considerable improvement after just a few iterations. Interpreted by the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart tool, this behaviour resumes to the component decoders' transfer characteristics intersecting and the decoding trajectory getting stuck at the intersection point. The ability to decode in the region beyond the intersection point has not been raised in previous literature. First, we investigate the region and this by applying, to one of the component decoders, a priori information that meets a certain condition to project the decoder's decoding capabilities beyond the intersection point. The outcome is two-fold. The expected result is the traditional forward decoding trajectory where, from iteration to the next, the performance increases in terms of bit-error rate (BER). The second result is a backward decoding trajectory where BER performance worsen as the number of iterations increases. Next, we give a direct application of the beyond-the-intersection-point decoding to relay-assisted communications where the source-destination link falls under the low SNR regime and the third intervening party feeds the necessary side information to the destination. Subsequently, necessary conditions on the channels, the nature of side information, the stopping and starting decoding process respectively at the relay and the destination are provided in order to have the destination operate in the proper region. Finally, simulation results confirm the relevance of our claim.
