We tried to reproduce the "Tojin" ( a generic term for foreigners in the early modern period of Japan) costumes in Chayamachi during the Nagoya Toshogu Shrine festival, in the late Edo-period. While studying the festive costumes, we felt it necessary not only to construe historical materials but to reproduce and actually try fitting them on to capture the configuration that could be worn without constraint. We chose the jacket of "sho-Tojin" (Tojin children) as the object of reproduction. The costume was the most worn type by the participants of the Chayamachi's parade. As far as we know, costumes of Tojin in Chayamachi have never been found. First, we considered the characteristics of the "sho-Tojin" costumes through literature and pictorial materials and strove for historical authenticity of the structure around the neck, the small collar, the cylinder sleeves, and the shape of the cape. And then, we went through the process of trial and error in recreating. Finally, we reproduced the "sho-Tojin" jacket, making every effort to select the coloring, patterns and technique close to those stated in the "Ito Jirozaemon papers No.447" of the Nagoya City Museum Collection. With limited information on reproduction and unclear information on the actual size and the sewing techniques, a complete reproduction was impossible. However, because there are only a limited number of historical clothing ornaments that are existent, there is significance in recreating costumes using contemporary accounts and to present them in a form that can actually be worn.
