Providing a reliable and efficient multi-hop broadcast in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) is crucial for Intelligent Transportation Systems. In order to provide a high reliability, a retransmission mechanism is required because a packet can be lost depending on the wireless link status and vehicle movement. The retransmission can significantly increase the message overhead if the relay nodes are not selected properly. The solution involves a joint consideration of retransmission and relay node selection. In this paper, we present a broadcast scheme which provides a high reliability with a low overhead. The scheme uses a fuzzy logic based approach to select relay nodes and uses a lightweight retransmission mechanism to retransmit a packet when a relay fails. We use computer simulations to evaluate the performance of the scheme and show the simulation results.
