Anthony Trollope's The Belton Estate (1866) was published serially in the Fortnightly Review and every number was divided into only two chapters, which was very unusual for his novels. In writing a novel in parts, he usually strived to make each part "a whole." Upon careful reading of the novel, it can be demonstrated that Trollope introduced some contrasting action by characters in each chapter in each number and was able to successfully establish the unity of each number. Due to the tight focus on a small number of characters, however, the novel was generally regarded as dull. The two-chapter numbers were also partly adopted in one of Trollope's masterpieces The Last Chronicle of Bar set (1867), and completely different from those in The Belton Estate. Instead of introducing contrasting actions by characters in one number after another, Trollope successfully avoided the dullness by focusing on different characters in two-chapter number and introducing alternately similar actions and contrasting actions by characters in the number. It is obvious that the experience in The Belton Estate made this possible in The Last Chronicle of Barset.
