The term International Education is used to describe a variety of activities and programs whichencourage the flow of ideas and people across cultural and geographic boundaries. InternationalEducation is not a clearly defined professional or disciplinary term, but rather, a useful label for awide variety ofintersecting activities and research interests. Activities have included exchanges, tech- nical cooperation, language and area studies, and information exchange activities. Implicit or explic- it in the reasons for these activities is the concept that these programs are vital if we are to preparea citizenry capable of dealing with the challenges of the modern world: we need to speak to the silentsimilarities in all of us.International education, has been considered synonymous with international educational exchange. However, these terms should be accepted as analogous. not equivalent. This paper will present a discussion of, and four case studies in. international education. The other two studies are of a community college and state universi- ty program. Each case study will describe the origin of the program. its goals. a description of the pro- gram and curriculum, and the strengths and weaknesses of each program. The paper will take an in depth look at how international education is being developed at these twointernational schools and two institutions.
