The main purpose of this study was to examine age-related differences in sense of direction using Sense of Direction Questionnaire-Short Form (SDQ-S; Takeuchi, 1992). SDQ-S consists of two factors, i.e. awareness of orientation (Factor I), and memory for usual spatial behavior (Factor II). The participants were 33 elderly adults aged from 67 - 87 years, and 32 undergraduate students aged 18 - 21 years. A questionnaire, administered to participants, included SDQ-S, self-rating of sense of direction. There were significant correlations between SDQ-S and self-rating of sense of direction. A t-test revealed that there were no significant differences between elderly adults and undergraduate students in SDQ-S, self-rating of sense of direction. Two-way (age, gender) ANOVA revealed that a main effect of gender was significant in Factor I, and all were not significant in Factor II. The results suggest that : 1) there are no age-related differences in sense of direction; 2) although it was not statistically significant, males have better awareness of orientation than females in elderly adults; 3) in a further study, it will be necessary to control various attributes in elderly adults.
