In my experience the translation of English subtitles helps learners to understand the content of movies. Several surmises are made analyzing the reasons for this, and their application to an ordinary reading class is discussed. Making the translation by themselves through the story or movies will be helpful to the English learners. The author proposed two English materials to the students, one of which is a short story, and the other a long movie. In addition, the researcher allowed them to either read the subtitles or watch movies and have them translate a topic sentence in each material into Japanese three times, as a pre-test and two post-tests. The results of the practice revealed that the examinees did not always follow their first translations that they made as a pre-test, after they were made privy to detail information about the material. The reasons for this are stated in detail using figures and tables.
