We live amidst symbols and trademarks; distinguishing between them has become second nature. Most appear in printed form‾‾ newspaper and magazine advertisements, folded inserts, direct mailings, posters‾‾ or as images in Internet or television commercials and videos. Trafiic signs, storefronts, billboards, directions and sign posts line our streets, each with its own symbols. Posters hang along streets and in train stations and cars. Department store and supermarket names and marks can be seen everywhere : other symbols guide to escalators, elevators and restrooms. Trademarks on tags attached to products at sales counters distinguish products of one company from another. Symbols are essential, and have figured in the history of brand consciousness. Examining symbols closely, we see a variety of designs, from those of long use like Japanese family crests to recently created corporate identity campaign marks. Analysis from the viewpoint of design composition elements reveals 3 broad classes, further combination of which results in a total of 7 types which make it possible to classify all symbols. Knowledge of these types should be applicable in both symbol design and design education.
