Disbudding increased the root weights, lengths, diameters and root head diameters of Bupleurum falcatum L. cultivated in 5 different soils. Histologically, the root of disbudded plants had a thicker xylem than that of untreated control plants. Little difference was observed in the root radius and the thickness of lignified xylem sclerenchyma. No significant difference was found either, in the saikosaponin a and d contents between the two groups. Disbudding was shown to significantly increase the viability of the plants. All these results show that disbudding is useful in increasing the yield of Bupleurum root without affecting its saponin contents.
