By ratooning, the late flowering line EL of Perilla frutescens may be harvested twice a year ("twice harvested crop") to give the crude drug yield which is significantly higher than those of one harvest EL crops ("once harvested crop") and which is also significantly higher than that of "twice harvested crop" (by ratooning) of the commercial variety, No. 13. The average crop productivity of "twice harvested EL crop" was the same as that of "once harvested crop," which indicates that in EL, the efficient growth period lasts for additional two months without much defoliation. In all the crops investigated, EL had a high essential oil content in which perillaldehyde was the major component. As regards the essential oil content, the quality of the crude drug of EL was maintained sufficiently high until just before the panicle emergence.
